University of Washington Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship
University of Washington
Seattle, WA

This advanced specialty residency program for PGY-5 psychiatry residents offers a 12-month training experience in the fundamentals of clinical geriatric psychiatry and qualifies graduates as candidates for Added Qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry. Presently, the Department provides stipends for two fellows per year for the required one-year training program. The fellowship is sponsored by the VA Puget Sound Health care system and has enjoyed a close relationship with the Geriatric Medicine Training program and the UW Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology.

The University of Washing Program is committed to providing an excellent foundation in geriatric psychiatry and gerontology. Presently, the program offers rotations at VA Puget Sound, Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, and community sites, and provides training experiences in inpatient, consultation-liaison, neurology, neuropsychology primary care, long-term care, and community nursing home settings. Fellows are exposed to the full range of contemporary treatment modalities and benefit from a particularly well-developed interaction with Geriatric Medicine and other allied health training programs in gerontology. Opportunities for involvement in research and/or other scholarly projects are available and a two-year competitive research extension of the fellowship is available.

The enriched academic and scientific environment of the UW affiliated program and large faculty pool trained in geriatric psychiatry and geriatric medicine provide many opportunities for seminars, case-conferences and other learning experiences. One measure of success of the program is the 100% pass rate for graduates taking the Added Qualifications exam on the first occasion.
