Fellows are prepared for leadership positions in academia and public health institutions and for Board certification in the subspecialty of Geriatric Psychiatry. This is an ACGME accredited program with close ties to Montefiore’s Fellowship Program in the Division of Geriatric Medicine. We offer 2 positions per year and have trained 58 geriatric psychiatrists as of 2007. The training sites include the Medical Center, a teaching nursing home, a home health care agency, and a naturally occurring retirement community.
Two thirds of the experience occurs in the out patient department, one sixth in the nursing home and one sixth in community settings. The curriculum includes multi-disciplinary seminars, case conferences, journal club and grand rounds. Supervision in pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, research as well as administrative psychiatry is integral to the program’s mission.
Fellows have responsibilities for teaching and supervision of students and residents in medicine and psychiatry. Fellows may participate in research studies of dementia and mild cognitive impairment and health services to depressed patients. Subsidized housing is available and there is a generous stipend provided to offset educational expenses.
